OLYMPIA – Next week in Tacoma, the Washington State Transportation Commission will hold a meeting with city, county and port officials to discuss transportation needs in the South Puget Sound region. Topics will include regional transportation funding opportunities for Pierce County, and the county’s approach to funding and prioritizing transportation needs. Washington State Department of Transportation representatives will provide information about regional freeway system projects and 2006 Tacoma Narrows Bridge milestones related to the Commission’s toll-setting responsibilities. The meeting will be held at the Tacoma Sheraton Hotel, 1320 Broadway Plaza, in Tacoma, starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26. The public is welcome to attend, and a public comment period is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. The Commission holds several “local meetings” each year in various cities throughout the state to gain insight about transportation issues that affect the local communities and the surrounding areas. This information helps the Commission develop and implement a comprehensive vision for the transportation system statewide that reflects the policies, plans and priorities of the people of the State of Washington. The Commission recently adopted its 2006 local meeting schedule. Local meetings, similar to this Tacoma meeting, will be held next year in the following:
- Tri-Cities, Wednesday, May 24
- Ellensburg, Wednesday, July 26
- Poulsbo, Wednesday, September 27
- Longview, Wednesday, November 29
