OLYMPIA – The Washington Transportation Commission is seeking comments on a proposal to increase the current toll rates for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In April, the Commission issued a toll proposal placing cash tolls at $4.00 and electronic tolls at $2.75, effective July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009.
The Commission will hold a public input meeting on May 20 from 6 – 8 p.m. at The Inn at Gig Harbor, 3211 56th Street NW, Gig Harbor. People are encouraged to attend this meeting and offer comments on the toll rate proposal. The Commission will then hold a final hearing on May 27 at the same time and location, where it will take additional public comment and adopt the new toll rates for the bridge.
Commissioners followed the recommendations of the Citizen Advisory Committee. When the bridge opened last summer, a $3.00 toll rate for all customers was anticipated to begin July 1, 2008. However, both the Citizen Advisory Committee and the Commission want to continue offering an incentive for those using the Good To Go! electronic transponders. Given that the state must collect enough toll revenue to meet debt payments related to construction of the bridge, the $1.00 increase over current toll rates was determined necessary to raise sufficient funds, while still maintaining a discount for Good To Go! customers.
The public comment period for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll proposal ends on May 27, 2008. Those who are not able to attend the input meeting or the final hearing may submit comments in writing by sending them to the following address: Washington State Transportation Commission, PO Box 47308, Olympia, Washington 98504-7308, or by e-mail at: transc@wsdot.wa.gov.
