OLYMPIA – Traffic and financial reports and toll rate schedules for both the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (TNB) and State Route 520 top the agenda items for the Washington State Transportation Commission’ meeting next week in Olympia.
The meeting will start 9 a.m. each day, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 11 and 12, at the Transportation Building, 310 Maple Park Ave. SE, on the Capital Campus in Olympia. The meeting is open to the public and persons wishing to speak to the commission may do so during the public comment periods scheduled for 4:45 p.m. on both days.
On Tuesday, the commission will take action on a Bi-State Tolling Agreement between Washington and Oregon for the Columbia River Crossing and on a proposed transportation revenue package that will be transmitted to the Legislature.
The commission will be briefed on the work of the Advisory Committee on Tolling and Traffic Management that is developing recommendations for tolling the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Tunnel. The Commission will also discuss possible 2013 toll adjustments for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the SR 520 floating bridge.
Wednesday’s meeting begins with discussion of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s recent internal tolling audit and a presentation regarding SR 520 construction.
They will then discuss the work plan and budget proposed by the Road Usage Charge Steering Committee which is recommending a full investigation in the 2013-15 biennium of how a RUC would work. The Commission’s study is assessing the feasibility of a future transition from the gas tax to a system that would charge drivers by the miles of road traveled, rather than by fuel consumption.
On Wednesday afternoon the commission will be briefed on a variety of ferry fare and marketing issues to set the stage for fare setting in 2013. Commissioners will also be presented with the results from the 2012 Ferry Riders’ Opinion Group Survey.
